Abstract

'Developing Creativity through Technology' is a course that was developed in 1999 as an optional project for third year B.Ed teacher trainees at Wellington College of Education. The course's focus was to offer the teacher trainees the opportunity to work with children in technology with an emphasis on developing their creative and critical thinking. So what's new? The approach was taken that, if the children were to develop their own creative and critical thinking skills then time and emphasis needed to be put into the initial planning and design stage of the whole process. It was decided that the children would be the designers, then tell the teacher trainees what to do to develop the products. As future teachers the trainees saw how carefully structured planning sessions can foster creative and critical thinking amongst groups of children. The children learnt about the importance of thinking very carefully about their designs and how to record their ideas for someone else to follow.

This paper describes the case study and its findings. It offers possible directions for other technology educators.
