Abstract

It is relatively straightforward for our student teachers to state definitions of technology and technology education. But as a subject that is often misunderstood, what do our future teachers really think about those who have chosen to make technology their career? This interpretivist research investigates how student teachers use their own drawings to unpack their perceptions of what a technologist is, and in many cases what a technologist isn’t.There is a common saying that ‘a picture tells a thousand words’, so by asking student teachers to “draw a technologist working” and then to critique their own pictures, they are able to investigate their understandings and beliefs. Only when a student has undertaken this process can they start consciously addressing the stereotypical inferences they may hold. These may be based on gender, ethnicity, age, social-economic grouping, social status, and traditional role perceptions. This pilot study investigates if this is an effective way to assist our future teachers to be cognisant of their own perceptions of people who work as technologists before they start teaching their own students about technology.
