Abstract

Technology and engineering education encompasses a broad area of human activity, one that is constantly evolving. To aid curriculum developers and teachers, the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) published Standards for Technological and Engineering Literacy: The Role of Technology and Engineering in STEM Education (STEL) in 2020 and has created numerous resources. The goal of STEL is to provide broad technological and engineering education experiences for all Pk-12 students so they can make informed decisions and contribute to the design, development, and use of technology. STEL provides a rationale and structure for the study of technology and engineering by distilling this broad field into a set of eight core disciplinary standards and eight practices that are widely applicable across a range of technology and engineering contexts (Figure 1). The STEL graphic organizer in Figure 1 should be imagined as a set of three octagons that can be rotated to indicate application of the core standards and technology and engineering practices in a variety of contexts. Students should study all standards and practices, but STEL provides curriculum developers and teachers flexibility to do so through the contexts that best fit their state, province, and/or local educational model. The development of STEL was supported by the National Science Foundation and the Technical Foundation of America and is a significant update on ITEEA’s Standards for Technological Literacy (2000).
