Abstract
In Japan, there is a need to enhance learning with scientific inquiry to increase students' awareness of the significance and usefulness of studying science, and their interest in science. We have developed a wooden mechanical pendulum clock as a teaching material for children to observe and inquiry, and the balance toys and the inverted pendulum toy as teaching materials for children to make and inquiry. We practiced workshops for elementary school students and clarified the educational value of them. In mechanical pendulum clocks, the escapement is controlled by the isochronism of the pendulum. Children will realize that the isochronism of the pendulum, which is the learning content, is helpful as a clock in daily life by using escapement mechanism. The inverted pendulum toy is made by using wood, bamboo strips, plastic round rods, and clothespins. It rotates and swings at the tip of a rod bending vibrating. The round bar connecting the model and the clothespin yields inverted pendulum motion after pushing the clothespin. The toy spins accordingly, and its legs and ears swing like a pendulum. After presenting the teaching materials for the mechanical pendulum clock, they inquired he pendulum while making the clock. Questions related to manufacturing will be set and evaluated using a four-factor method and an open-ended questionnaire. In the second lecture, the students looked for escapements in various clocks and showed interest in the inverted pendulum toy. Free-responses of the questionnaire survey are shown as follows: "I can't predict the movement.", "Why does it start to rotate even though it moves left and right?"The activities with excitement, wonder, and surprise led to their desire for inquiry. These results clarify that the students wondered the motion of the inverted pendulum toy and deepened their inquiry through toy-making and playing.
