Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop teaching materials for circuit design and fabrication, and to conduct workshop for elementary school pupils .In order to develop STEM-literate regarding the electrical technology field, it is important to have pupils engage on circuit design and fabrication from when they begin to learn about electricity.In Japan, pupils learn about basic electricity and electric circuit in Science subject from the 3rd grade of elementary school.However, while the objective is to make pupils acquire perspectives and ideas of electric phenomenon and functions, not to develop the ability to design and making electric circuit.In Japanese compulsory education, only Technology subject in junior high school has circuit design as a content of study.Although several teaching strategies were tried, electric circuit design is a difficult for students and best way for teaching is not identified.Naturally, to design an electric or electronic circuit, it is important that understanding electric circuit concepts.We have investigated on beginners the relationship between conceptual understanding of electric circuits and the ability to design, and it was identified that the concept of connection is foundational for circuit design.Therefore, as an introduction to the learning of electric circuit design at the elementary school level, we focused on wiring design, which deals only with the concept of connection.And, we thought that it would be useful to have pupils engage in hands-on activities from design to fabrication.Though, many of the electric and electronic circuit fabrication situation involves soldering, which is not an easy means for elementary school pupils.So, in this study, we developed hands-on circuit design learning materials using conductive tape, and conducted a workshop for wiring design and circuit fabrication.
