Technology concepts in the Digital Technologies subject area are continuously advancing in the 21st century and teachers are constantly under pressure to look to update their knowledge in this ever-evolving area. The current theme across most outreach programs seems to be robotics and coding and students have been regularly exposed to them as part of a wider technology curriculum integration at primary and intermediate years. While these topics seem to provide certain amount of fascination and interest in learners due to the nature of the technology involved, it has not necessarily resulted in an increase in student numbers pursuing the subject at higher years. My study seeks to investigate the 'intention to learn' technology through the lens of the well-established 'expectancy-value model' paradigm. Participating students at year 9 were interviewed prior and after completing an online program based on the Internet of Things(IoT) area using the Microbit and an IoT shield. The data gathered will shed further light on students choices and intentions to study the subject further, while also try and understand reasons that put digital technology behind other subject areas.
