Abstract

Whether near (similar ideas and concepts) or far (more abstract ideas), student creativity may in part hinge on their abilities to transfer ideas, concepts, patterns, and processes to new and novel settings/situations.  Many inventions and innovations have resulted from the creative processes involved in transfer (e.g., BubbleWrap was originally a wallpaper, the Slinky was designed to stabilize naval equipment, and Frisbie’s were originally pie dishes); however, these skills aren’t automatic in students.  What can teachers do to foster student’s transfer abilities?  Preliminary results from our NSF-sponsored research will be shared along with anecdotal evidence collected from students in high school (9th-grade, 14-15 years old).
